14th Virginia Cavalry Co H

Introduction

The (new) 14th Virginia Cavalry, Co. H - Rockbridge Dragoons was organization in January 2008 and Incorporated on February 26, 2009. We were granted our tax exempt (Public Charity) 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code December 2009.

Many of our members have years of experience, reenacting, teaching and training horses. All of our charter members have come from other organizations and bring many talents to the group. We look forward to sharing this knowledge with new members and teaching the public about the War Between the States.

We could not do what we do without the horse. The warhorse is not the typical trail horse; our horses are trained, with some exceptions, the same way they were in the mid 1800s. The ability to drill horses and maneuver as a unit, to shoot muskets off their backs or charge an opposing group of horses head-on with sabers or pistols are not typical horse behaviors. This training takes patience and constant work. And of course, all our horses are well cared for and meet all the required equine health requirements.

As a family organization we encourage our wives and children to participate in all events. Family members portray period wives, mothers, nurses and sometimes defenders. They dress in period clothing and make camp life complete. Children were often allowed in civil war camps and we are no exception. Many of our children have participated in camp life since they were born. As part of the ambiance, they often use period toys, games, dolls and accoutrements that add to the experience.

Portraying a mid 18th century solider is a humbling and sometimes emotional experience. Our goal is to depict the life of a Confederate and sometimes Federal cavalry soldier to the best of our ability, and just maybe spark a desire for the specator to learn more as well. If you enjoy Civil War history, horses and teaching, you have come to the right place.

Our first season was a big success and we made many new friends. We enjoyed several new events despite the rain. As we approach the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States, you will find us at many events, schools and living histories. We hope you will take the time to come see us and learn more about this period of American History. Also, visit battlefield parks and museums; spend some time in your local library. Learn about your ancestors during this incredible period in our Nation. Get involved.

See our schedule to see where you can find us doing what we enjoy most.
